Experience matters!

Make sure you are getting what you pay for by hiring an experienced faux painter in Atlanta. A poorly prepped or painted finish not only looks bad, it can peal, stain and diminish the value of your room without you knowing it.

Using the wrong materials means more headaches, time and energy for you – often costing more than the original job. My 27 years of experience gives you the assurance that my work will look beautiful and last for years to come.!

Faux Painting is popular in Atlanta

Faux painting Atlanta provides versatility and durability

Faux Painting has become very popular way to decorate for homeowners in Atlanta, Georgia. Having been a professional painter and artist for over 35 years I have seen many decorating trends come and go but none have been as long-lasting and diverse as faux painting.

faux painting atlantaMany years ago, the biggest challenge I faced was trying to convince homeowners to try painting something as unusual as a decorative finish on their walls. Now the challenge is staying on top of all the different faux finish, products, techniques and options one can achieve as a decorative painter.

Faux painting is affordable

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of faux painting is the ability to create a total effect with nothing but paint, texture and color. Dollar for dollar faux painting is an exceptional way to extend your decorating budget and still get high-end results. In many instances, I have noticed that the price I charge to hand paint the walls 2 or 3 times is less than the cost of even one piece of furniture or accessory. Yet the impact of a hand-painted faux finish is big.

Faux painting your home

Faux painting is also extremely durable, which means it’s perfect to use in a variety of situations including bathrooms, kitchens in high wear areas like children’s play rooms and kids rooms.

Wallpaper is simply not as versatile in terms of wear and tear and touch ability. There are many new products that allow faux finishes to add real texture like suede and Venetian plasters.

Combining stenciling and murals allow faux painters to create a literally endless variety of wall décor. Metallic finishes are really hot and for good reason, they bring in light color and texture with a huge wow factor.

If you’ve been thinking about getting faux painting done in your home give us a call at (404) 239-3910. You might be surprised at the number of affordable, faux painting choices you have to decorate your home. Multicolor color washes and simple textured walls can create a unique and exotic effect without breaking the bank.

There are also faux finishes that don’t use a lot of different colors, which makes it easy to decorate around while still giving your polls some pizzazz.

New faux painting ideas for 2011

Faux Painting Ideas for 2011

One of the best things about faux painting is the almost unlimited number of ideas that are able to be created.  As decorating styles and colors change so do faux painting techniques. Several new techniques that are becoming popular take old ideas and give them a twist.

New Decorative Painting Ideas

Horizontal stripes and new colors take front stage. Horizontal stripes in graduating colors can make a bold statement. Add a light ditressing and pearlesant wash to it and you have a fabulous look that turns heads, no matter what room its in.

New colors are delicious and in shades of  lime, lavender, mocha and cinnamon. These new colors can be used:

  • with Venetian plasters for a slick slightly textured look
  • with metallic suede for a rich warm feel
  • in a mixed texture/ colorwash for a brilliant way to liven up a large wall surface

Don’t let color scare you, there are many ways to infuse the life and excitement that color can bring without overwhelming the space.  Add a richly textured accent wall or paint the ceiling a color. Use color washes to infuse the room with richer color while maintaining a sense of light. Paint a piece of furniture or add a colorful floorcloth  to build on the fresh color theme.

Sponge Painting gets a new look

Sponge Painting gets a new look

Sponge painting revisited

Faux painting has come a long way from the early 1990′s when sponge painting was all the rage.  Even though many people created plenty of wonderful effects with sponges, this technique became the “homeowner” finish.

Sponge painting gets a bad rap

Even today many people call decorative paintingsponge painting”  because of it’s early roots. Sponge painting techniques do lend themselves to DIY application but often the edges and corners get missed – giving an unprofessional appearance.

sponge painting

Now faux painters are using sponges to create amazing new finishes. New products and techniques allow the introduction of exciting finishes using sponges, trowels and other implements.

Mix your faux painting techniques

This example uses a sponged base coat along with a ragged top coat to create a stunning effect. Metallic paints and plasters are also great for creating unusual finishes with sparkle and shimmer.

Try sponging the plaster on over a simple color wash. Let the metallic plaster sit for no more than 3-4 minutes and the flatten with a trowel. this creates an irregular finish that is very organic and pleasing.

Sponge painting combined with other tools and techniques makes your walls unique

By mixing three different faux painting techniques and sponge painting it is possible to create a completely unique look in any color combination you want!

Faux Painting your Bathroom

Faux Painting Bathroom

Faux Painting to redecorate your bathroom

Here are a few simple ideas how to do faux painting in your bathroom and how to redecorate a dated powder room in just one weekend can go along way to help rejuvenate a worn out look. The best thing about it is that it can be done in a relatively short period of time and doesn’t require that you rip out tile jobs or sinks in order to get a new look.

Prime now or pay for it later

First of all let me say if you’re going to paint anything, make sure that you have cleaned and primed the surface first with a good latex bonding primer, like Benjamin Moore’s “Fresh Start” or Gliddens “Gripper”. Do any patching and caulking before you get ready to paint so it will be dry and ready to go when you are.

Updating a dated vanity with silver

If you have one of those older styled 60′s square box vanities, creating an updated look is relatively simple and painless. Start by painting the entire surface with a latex silver paint ( not spray paint and not oil paint!) Let it dry.  Do 2 coats, if you need it.

Glaze

Make a glaze: 3 parts glaze and 1 part color like chocolate or deep red. Start with the cabinet sides and face plates,  brush glaze on and immediately wipe it off, leaving the color to sit in any cracks or trim. Work in one small area at a time. Save the doors for last, and work on the inside first — let it dry — then close the doors and work on the front of the doors. The color of the glaze can be adjusted to the colors of your decorating style, the deeper the color, the more contrast it will have with the silver.

A shimmering ceiling

Paint the ceiling with the same silver latex paint. Roll on one coat and let dry. For the 2nd coat hand brush it on with a wide 4 inch brush, making exaggerated X marks or crosshatching. This will give the silver a more organic feel and help it cover. You can also glaze and white the ceiling as well or leave it sparkling, whichever you prefer.

Colorful Walls

Since the vanity and the ceiling are now silver and somewhat neutral. Your walls have the flexibility be almost any color you want. I suggest choosing a strong color that you love. Small rooms do not look smaller because there is color on the wall — they look smaller because there is nothing more interesting to look at. Why not try a bright pumpkin orange or hot lime green color? Paint 2 coats in a satin finish and top it off with a hand brushed layer of clear Pearlescent paint.

A clear metallic or opalescent paint’s are available at big-box hardware stores and paint companies and offers sheens that are either gold or silver. These are invisible until the light hits them and then shine brightly with a silver metallic sheen giving your old bathroom, a bold, updated look in just one weekend.
